On June 7, the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines, together with the Australia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Philippines, staged a viewing event of this year’s first rugby union test match between England and New Zealand at the Dusit Thani hotel in Makati.
Reuben Levermore, the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, formally kick-offed the ceremonies with an opening address. Apart from the NZ Ambassador, Matt Cullen, Jake Letts and Kenny Stern of the Philippine Volcanoes, the men’s national rugby union team, were also present to witness the action.
The 70 people in attendance were treated to a barbecue and free-flowing drinks served to accompany them in watching the game. To make things more interesting, a reward of a brunch for four at the Dusit Thani was offered to the person who could predict the correct final score of the match.
In a tense and very even contest, both England and New Zealand found it difficult to break past each other’s defences as most of the points scored came from penalty kicks. However, a late try from New Zealand’s Conrad Smith separated both teams at the end of the match to make it 20-15 for the Kiwis.
Marcus Jenner, who guessed that the score would be 21-16 was the closest to the actual score and claimed the brunch prize.
We would like to thank ANZCHAM, Forth & Tay, Dusit Thani Manila, and the Philippine Volcanoes for helping us make the event a great success.
