The FCO updated Travel Advice on 31 October for all countries, including the Philippines. The update asks all British citizens overseas to be aware of a heightened threat of attacks on British interests and citizens by groups or individuals motivated by the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq. It asks all to be vigilant at this time.
What this does not mean
This does not mean that we consider any of you or the Embassy to be subject to any specific threat. There is no / no reason for alarm or undue concern.
The travel advice update reflects a global situation and is sensible advice for Brits globally. It isn't a surprise in view of the tragic conflict in the Middle East and some of the terrorist groups it has spawned. It is in line with Travel Advice issued by other counties. And, as we all know from living in the Philippines, the existence of criminal and terrorist groups is not itself cause for alarm. But it does mean that sensible precautions should be taken.
What we've done
We have reviewed Embassy security and believe it is right. No additional measures will be taken. Our G4S security team has been briefed and will be vigilant. We are sharing the information with wardens and the British community generally, including the British School, ISM and British Council.
The assistance requested from you all
Two, hopefully clear and simple, things:
1) Do make family members / British friends aware;
2) Always make a point of being familiar with our Travel Advice (available on the Embassy website) and act upon it;
Thank you.
